People with acne frequently have a variety of lesions:
The basic acne lesion, called the comedo (KOM-e-do), is simply an enlarged and plugged hair follicle.
If the plugged follicle, or comedo, stays beneath the skin, it is called a closed comedo and produces a white bump called a whitehead.
A comedo that reaches the surface of the skin and opens up is called an open comedo or blackhead because it looks black on the skin’s surface. This black discoloration is due to changes in sebum as it is exposed to air. It is not due to dirt. Both whiteheads and blackheads may stay in the skin for a long time.
Papules are inflamed lesions that usually appear as small, pink bumps on the skin and can be tender to the touch.
Pustules (pimples) are papules topped by white or yellow pus-filled lesions that may be red at the base.
Most common on the face, acne lesions can also occur on the scalp, neck, chest, shoulders, back, and upper arms and legs.
How Epiduo® Gel Treats Acne
Even mild acne is a medical condition that benefits from prescription therapy. Epiduo® Gel has been proven effective in treating acne.
The adapalene in Epiduo® Gel works to improve existing acne lesions and helps prevent new acne from forming by normalizing the skin cells that clog pores (working on the comedones) while reducing the inflammation associated with acne (working to reduce pustules and papules). Benzoyl peroxide reduces the bacteria that causes acne.
All with ONE single, easy-to-use medication! Your doctor can help you determine if Epiduo® Gel is the right acne treatment for you. If you’d like help finding a dermatologist, just click on the Find a Dermatologist tool at the left of this page.
